BOTOX™ Cosmetic, a purified form of Botulinum Toxin A, which comes from bacterial
cultures processed into a protein, has been used for years to treat
patients with certain muscular disorders. More recently, though,
BOTOX™ Cosmetic has been getting attention as an anti-wrinkle treatment that
is quick, convenient and
has minimal side effects.
Wrinkles are
formed as the face muscles contract to laugh, smile or frown. As these muscles
contract, groves are worn into the skin. BOTOX™ Cosmetic relaxes the facial muscles by attaching
to the nerve terminals and blocking the release of a neurotransmitter. This prevents
the muscles from contracting and can
reduce or even eliminate the forming of wrinkles.

For over 10
years, BOTOX™ Cosmetic has been used to help patients who suffer from Blepharospasm, a muscular
disorder that makes it difficult, if not impossible to open the eye. BOTOX™ Cosmetic use
is not limited to the face. It can be used to correct many muscle spasms such
as voice box spasms and neck spasms.
The clinic
uses a micro needle to inject a small amount of BOTOX™ Cosmetic into the area of choice.
Pain is minimal and most patients compare the sensation to that of a bug bite.
Injections are normally given every three to six months because the effects of
the treatment are temporary. Usually, results are seen within three days of the
injection, and begin to diminish after the sixth month. The duration of benefit
is extended with each successive treatment, therefore the second treatment usually
lasts longer than the first, and so on.
BOTOX™ Cosmetic is commonly
used on the vertical "frown" lines between the eyebrows and on the horizontal
lines on the forehead. It is also quite effective on the "crows feet"at
the corners of the eyes and can sometimes help with the bands of muscles at the
front of the neck. Our patients tell us they are quite pleased with the results
of their BOTOX™ Cosmetic treatments and enjoy the more youthful appearance they gain from
less wrinkling.
