 HAIR RESTORATION
Hair loss can be caused by a number of factors, including aging, hormonal changes, or it can even be hereditary. The loss of hair can also be the result of burns or trauma. While hair loss is predominantly found in the male population, even females can suffer from hair loss. If you are looking for an effective treatment to hair loss, hair replacement is available at the practice of Dr. Daniel Rousso, located here in Birmingham, Alabama.
In Birmingham, hair transplant procedures are frequently performed at the Rousso Facial Plastic Surgery Clinic, located at the Mountain Brook Center. The board certified Daniel E. Rousso, M.D., is also a clinical assistant professor of surgery at the University of Alabama.
Using the very latest technology, Dr. Rousso and staff can create a healthy head of hair by moving wholesome hair from the sides and back of the head to balder areas.
To achieve the most natural looking results with hair transplantation, our practice performs follicular unit hair transplants. Once the hair is taken from the donor site, it is then transplanted to the areas to be restored. Days of "plugs and corn row" type transplants are in the past. Today, follicular unit grafts consisting of only 1-2 hairs are used. This technique mimics the hair's intrinsic growth pattern providing the most natural appearance possible. It is no longer just men who desire more hair density and wish to restore the hairline of their youth. More women than ever are seeking surgical intervention to provide them with thicker hair and more overall confidence in their appearance.
For additional information about our follicular unit graft hair transplants please visit our Alabama Hair Institute website or contact our office for more information.
Who Needs Hair Transplant the Most?
An ideal candidate for a hair transplant usually:
- Has healthy hair growth at the back and sides of the head for use as donor hair
- Is self-conscious about balding areas
- Has a good understanding of the hair transplantation procedure
- Is willing to wait three months before hair starts growing in again
Many patients have remarked that the discomfort of hair transplantation is not much more than that of going to the dentist. A local anesthetic permits removal of small hairs for transplants, and any discomfort that may occur is generally mild and readily relieved by pain killers.

Update on Propecia:
Recently, new results of long term studies have revealed that medical treatment of hair loss has a definite role in the management of male pattern hair loss. The oral medication Propecia has been shown to effectively regrow hair or prevent the further loss of hair in over 90% of the men who use the medication. At the clinic, we are now recommending all of our Birmingham hair transplant patients also take Propecia in order to yield the best cosmetic results. Of course, transplants will grow without the help of Propecia, but the medication can add to the overall effect of the surgery.
Propecia must be taken for at least six months to determine its effectiveness, and must be continued daily in order for the patient to receive a prolonged effect. It is a prescription medicine, and must be monitored by a physician. In order to better serve our patients interested in using Propecia, we recently started a program to dispense the medication out of our office, directly to our patients. We can automatically send patient refills in the mail, which avoids the trouble of going to the pharmacy and maintains strict confidentiality for our patients. This new program can also reduce the cost to our patients and assures that patients never run out of their supply of medication. If you are interested in learning more about Propecia and our "Auto-Refill Program", contact our office at 205.930.9595.
Unfortunately, Propecia is not helpful for female pattern hairloss. Hair transplants are still the best treatment for female pattern hair loss and can be remarkably effective for most women.
Dr Rousso is board certified by the American Board of Facial Plastic Surgery, the American Board of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, and the American Board of Hair Replacement Surgery. He is also a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
To achieve the best aesthetic appearance, Birmingham hair transplant patients may be required to make several visits to Dr. Rousso's clinic for follow ups. A healing period of several months is usually recommended between each visit.
Arrange a consultation with Dr. Rousso or email the doctor with any questions you may have. Feel free to telephone the office at 205-930-9595 (or, toll free number, 877-932-0400).
