Blepharoplasty

BLEPHAROPLASTY

In most cases, excess skin and fat in the upper and/or lower eyelids causing a "puffy" appearance can make a person appear tired, worn-out, or angry. If you are experiencing this problem, you may be a good candidate for eyelid surgery ("blepharoplasty surgery"). Predominantly performed for cosmetic reasons, blepharoplasty can also improve impaired vision by removing redundant skin above the eyelids ("dermatochalasis"). Whether done for cosmetic or reconstructive reasons, blepharoplasty can significantly provide a more youthful, refreshed appearance.

As we begin to age we start noticing that our upper eyelid skin begins to lose its elasticity resulting in the skin "sagging". As time goes on this skin excess continues to sag to the extent that the upper eyelids appear droopy with skin eventually resting on the upper lashes. This condition is called Dermatochalasis, which is the redundancy of upper and lower lid tissues due to the aging process. Also in some patients the fatty pads (which normally cushion the eye) will begin to bulge or herniate which gives a "puffy" appearance. Sometimes young adults will have early excess skin of the upper and lower lids which is due to heredity. This condition is referred to as Blepharochalasis. Both these conditions are predominately cosmetic in nature. If a patient's vision becomes altered by redundancy of skin to the extent that it interferes with their ability to see, and vision lost peripherally and/or superiorly, it is possible that insurance may cover surgery. These cases are considered "functional" in nature. Insurance does not cover "cosmetic" Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery). For "functional" eyelid surgery, insurance carriers require potential Birmingham blepharoplasty patients to participate in visual field testing prior to any surgical intervention, along with documentation that surgery will result in a minimum 25 degree visual improvement.

Blepharoplasty surgery corrects both problems and removes puffiness and bags under the eyes that make you look worn and tired. This procedure cannot alter dark circles, fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes nor change sagging eyebrows.
