The Bare Facts About Sun Damage

Sun damage to our skin can occur during any time of the year. Though time spent outside is usually during the Spring and Summer months, we still need to remember that keeping our skin healthy is just as important during the Fall and Winter. Sun damage has cumulative effects, and occurs whether we are at the beach, enjoying an outdoor sports event, even riding in the car.

Ultraviolet light, whether natural or artificial (tanning beds) can be harmful to our skin. Skin aging is accelerated by exposure to the sun, resulting in fine lines and premature wrinkles. There is also a direct relationship between sun exposure and the development of skin cancers.

Experts caution people against unprotected exposure to the sun. The number of people who develop melanoma is increasing and researchers believe it is because people are spending more time in the sun. The National Cancer Institute says that studies suggest that avoiding sunburn in childhood and adolescence may reduce the incidence of melanoma skin cancer.
