CHIN AUGMENTATION

As we analyze facial form and beauty, multiple different views are necessary to achieve an overall aesthetic concept. Most of us see ourselves as a frontal view when we look in the mirror, while others see us from many angles, including frontal, oblique and profile views. It is only when we see ourselves in a photograph or a three-way mirror, that we may realize any profile deficiencies. The nose and chin are major features that contribute to the profile, and any excess or deficiency in either feature can detract from the overall appearance. A nasal hump or a weak chin can conflict with ideal facial proportions. A well defined chin helps give balance and harmony to the face. Chin augmentation is a relatively simple procedure that can make a major difference in one's appearance.
A pleasing, balanced profile can be achieved either by inserting an implant to build up the chin, or by making cuts in the jawbone to move the chin or jaw forward. For someone who has a problem with their bite, then it may be best to coordinate orthodontic treatment with oral surgery to move the entire jaw forward. In patients who have normal dental occlusion, then placement of a chin implant is an option.

The chin augmentation procedure is performed by making a small incision under the chin (similar to the incision used during the facelift procedure) and creating a precise pocket in front of the bone of the chin in which to place the implant. The implant, made of synthetic woven mesh is custom-made for each individual's particular need. After implantation, fine sutures are used to close the incision.

There is usually minimal discomfort postoperatively, which can be controlled with prescribed medications. A soft food diet may be required for a few days after the surgery. Patients can resume activities within two weeks, and after approximately two to four weeks most swelling will be gone.
