What Is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty, commonly called a nose job, is a surgical procedure that reshapes the nose for cosmetic or functional reasons. It can refine the nasal bridge, tip, or nostrils, correct asymmetry, and improve breathing by addressing structural issues such as a deviated septum. For those considering rhinoplasty in Birmingham, Rousso Adams offers a highly individualized approach that accounts for facial balance, ethnicity, and long-term function. Performed by board-certified facial plastic surgeons, the procedure blends surgical precision with an artistic understanding of harmony and proportion.

Types of Rhinoplasty

Every nose is different, which means the surgical technique must be carefully selected to match the patient’s anatomy, goals, and cultural background. If you're interested in Rhinoplasty in Birmingham, at Rousso Adams, our surgeons use a personalized approach for each case. Whether the goal is to improve breathing, refine ethnic features, or correct the results of a previous procedure, the chosen method supports a natural, lasting outcome.

Closed Rhinoplasty

Closed rhinoplasty involves incisions placed entirely inside the nostrils, leaving no visible scarring. This approach provides access to reshape the underlying cartilage and bone without opening the nasal structure. It is best suited for patients who need minor to moderate cosmetic refinements, such as smoothing a small bump, refining the nasal tip, or correcting mild asymmetry. Because the internal view is limited, it may not be appropriate for more complex nasal reconstruction.

Ethnic Rhinoplasty

Ethnic rhinoplasty is designed to refine the nose while preserving the unique features that reflect a patient’s heritage. Instead of reshaping the nose to fit a one-size-fits-all ideal, this approach considers skin thickness, nasal structure, and cultural aesthetics to maintain facial harmony. It is often sought by patients of African, Asian, Middle Eastern, or Latin descent who want to enhance the nose without compromising ethnic identity. The procedure may involve bridge augmentation, tip refinement, or narrowing of the nostrils, depending on individual goals.

Open Rhinoplasty

Open rhinoplasty uses a small incision across the columella (the strip of tissue between the nostrils), allowing the surgeon to lift the nasal skin and gain full visibility of the internal structures. This method is ideal for patients requiring more significant reshaping, revision surgery, or correction of structural problems like severe asymmetry or a deviated septum. While a small scar at the base of the nose may result, it typically fades well and is often barely noticeable over time.

Revision Rhinoplasty

Revision rhinoplasty is performed to correct or improve the results of a previous nose surgery. Patients may seek this procedure due to unresolved cosmetic concerns, breathing difficulties, or complications from the initial operation. Because the nasal structures have already been altered, revision procedures are typically more complex and require advanced surgical skill. At Rousso Adams, the approach is highly individualized, with a strong emphasis on restoring both function and appearance while minimizing further disruption to the nasal framework.

Non‑Surgical Rhinoplasty (Liquid Nose Job)

Liquid rhinoplasty offers a non‑surgical alternative to reshape the nose using dermal fillers instead of incisions or anesthesia. At Rousso Adams, this option is ideal for smoothing minor bumps, enhancing the nasal bridge, or refining the tip, especially if you're not ready for surgery or want to preview potential surgical results. The procedure usually takes under 30 minutes, causes minimal swelling or bruising, and delivers immediate results that may last up to 12 to 18 months, depending on filler type. It is not suitable for reducing nose size or correcting severe structural issues. Unlike surgical options, liquid rhinoplasty is reversible when hyaluronic acid fillers are used. If you’d like more detailed recovery timings or filler specifics, see our full Liquid Rhinoplasty page.

Candidate Qualifications

Candidates for rhinoplasty are individuals who would like to improve the appearance, size, or shape of their nose or who have nasal defects, injuries, or impaired breathing they would like to correct. The best candidates for cosmetic rhinoplasty are looking for improvement, not perfection, in the way their noses look. Even though dramatic changes can be made, patients should have realistic expectations. Rhinoplasty can help patients by enhancing their appearance and boosting their self-confidence.

Our Patient Reviews

What does Rhinoplasty treat?

Unappealing Nasal Characteristics

Individuals who are unhappy with the appearance of their noses can benefit from nose surgery. Nose surgery can reduce or increase the size of the nose, narrow the nostrils, change the shape of the nasal tip, adjust the bridge, and even alter the angle between the nose and upper lip. Rhinoplasty can transform a nose that detracts from your facial aesthetic to one that enhances it and improves balance, proportion and harmony.

Nasal Defects or Injuries

Men and women who have nasal defects, such as congenital deformities, can enhance nasal appearance, structure, and confidence with rhinoplasty. Rhinoplasty can also correct injuries that may have occurred due to athletic activities or accidents. In the experienced hands of our plastic surgeons, Dr. Daniel Rousso and Dr. Austin Adams, even significant unsightly deformities or injuries can be corrected with nose surgery. They have solutions for even the most complex cases.

Nasal Breathing Problems

Those who suffer from nasal breathing problems can relieve their ailments with nose surgery. These problems are often the result of a deviated nasal septum. Through rhinoplasty, the structures of the nose can be manipulated to correct a deviated septum and restore open airways. This can enable you to breathe through your nose with improved ease after your surgery.

Healing After Rhinoplasty

Healing from rhinoplasty begins with early recovery but continues long afterward. At Rousso Adams in Birmingham, you’ll receive personalized post-operative guidance in our AAAHC-accredited surgical center. During the first 1 to 2 weeks after surgery, patients typically wear a nasal splint and experience swelling and bruising. Most return to normal activities around 7 to 10 days, with significant improvement in appearance by two to three weeks. Over several months, soft tissues settle and the final nasal contours become visible.

Our surgeons and support team provide concierge-level follow-up care, assisting with appointments, lodging, and travel arrangements if needed. Their methodical focus and gentle attention ensure both natural-looking results and confidence as patients adjust to their refined appearance. Learn more about the detailed timeline and healing process on the Rhinoplasty Healing page.

Pain During and After Rhinoplasty

Anesthesia prevents all feelings of pain during surgery. The use of a special dissolvable suture for the nasal septum eradicates the need for packing, which dramatically reduces postoperative discomfort. Because pain may be experienced as feeling returns to the nose during recovery, mild pain relievers may be used to alleviate any temporary discomfort. Any intensity of pain will normally only last for 36–72 hours but may last longer if the nose is bumped or manipulated.

Rhinoplasty Results

Early results will be visible as soon as most of the swelling has subsided about two weeks after the operation. The results at this time will be mostly finalized, but slight changes will occur as the internal nasal structures adjust and swelling continues to subside. By one year after the rhinoplasty, your results will be final. Many of our patients tell us rhinoplasty has restored their confidence, facial harmony and beauty.

How long is the procedure?

Rhinoplasty usually takes one or two hours, though extensive surgeries may take longer.

Can I receive other procedures at the same time as nose surgery?

Nose surgery is often performed with other facial cosmetic procedures, such as eyelid surgery, chin augmentation and facelift surgery. Your cosmetic surgeon can help you determine if you’ll benefit from undergoing additional procedures with your nose surgery.

Will I have a scar after rhinoplasty?

Closed rhinoplasty has no visible scarring. Open rhinoplasty may leave a scar at the base of the nose where the incision was placed. However, this scar is usually minor and inconspicuous. Scars typically fade over time.

Individuals should be at least 14 to 15 years old to qualify for rhinoplasty. Younger children may not be physically or emotionally mature enough for the procedure.

How long do rhinoplasty results last?

The results from rhinoplasty will last a lifetime. You will be able to enjoy your new nose for many years to come.
