Plump, youthful, defined lips attract the eye, signaling youth, health, and vitality. A few people are blessed with perfect lips, but with our custom lip augmentation treatments, you can achieve the look you envision – plump, full, and youthful. This treatment can create a lovely enhancement, refresh your look, restore definition, or create a more visible Cupid’s bow.

Lip augmentation is among the most popular facial enhancements in the USA, performed to enhance natural lip volume or restore lost volume in thinning lips. There are a variety of methods available to increase lip volume, for the fuller, plumper lips you desire, and a more aesthetic, pleasing look.

What is lip augmentation?

At Rousso Adams Facial Plastic Surgery, we have advanced techniques that create long-term results, without the need to return for injections every six months. You may choose to undergo lip augmentation with hyaluronic acid fillers to experience the look and then undergo a longer-lasting enhancement. Our array of options includes:

  • Lip implants: One of the most enduring types of lip augmentation is lip implant surgery. The treatment involves inserting either a synthetic or biological material into small incisions made in one or both lips. Depending on the level of volume desired, different sizes of implants are available. Synthetic implants are typically made from soft, pliable silicone that matches the feeling of natural lip tissue.

  • Lip implants with natural tissue: Another type of lip augmentation can be performed as part of a facelift. In this treatment, excess tissue from the middle and lower thirds of the face, also known as SMAS (superficial musculoaponeurotic system) is removed. The SMAS consists of fibrous tissue, collagen, and natural fat, and it separates the facial skin from the facial muscles. The extracted tissue is positioned and shaped in the lips to add volume. It delivers immediate and lasting results with little downtime.
  • Subnasal lip lift (bullhorn): If aging has left you with an elongated lip that hides your teeth when smiling, this procedure reduces the distance between nose and lip for a subtle, beautiful lift. This creates a fuller, more youthful look, enhancing natural facial harmony. The technique is named after the bullhorn-shaped incision applied directly beneath the nose.

What can lip augmentation treat?

A lip augmentation can resolve any of the following aesthetic issues:

  • Thin lips
  • Lost lip volume due to aging
  • Uneven lip structure
  • Lack of lip definition
  • Elongated upper lip
  • Aging lips
  • Unbalanced lip appearance
  • Restore lips after cancer surgery

Candidates for lip augmentation

Candidates for lip augmentation should be in good general health and not allergic to silicone (when implants are used) and be a non-smoker. If you have thinning lips, uneven lips, or want to enhance your lips, you are likely a candidate for one of our options.

How is lip augmentation performed?

  • In a bullhorn lip augmentation, our facial plastic surgeon will administer local anesthesia and to the lip area. Once numb, incisions are made directly under the nostrils and up to one-third of the skin is excised between the nose and upper lip. The incision is closed with tiny sutures. Once healed, the incision is usually hidden by the natural creases in the skin and is sometimes virtually invisible. Another type of lip lift is done by lifting the lip at the vermillion lip border.
  • You may want smaller lips to achieve greater harmony between the upper and lower lips for a more aesthetic look. In most cases, one or both lips can be reduced in size with small incisions, requiring only local anesthesia.
  • Superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS) lip augmentation is a surgical procedure that is performed in conjunction with facelift surgery. Typically, a portion of the SMAS (which is excess soft tissue under the skin removed during a facelift) can be used to plump the lips. The thin strip of tissue is placed in the upper and lower lip and repositioned. A small incision is needed to implant the tissue, which heals to being invisible. This technique uses the patient’s own tissue and results are permanent.
  • For patients who desire lip implants, we offer SurgiSil™ implants. The implants are inserted through a small incision made in the corner of the mouth, and the implants are then slid into the upper and lower lip. This procedure can be performed under local or sedation anesthesia. Implants come in multiple sizes to accommodate patients’ desires.

Recovery after lip augmentation

The recovery from surgical lip augmentation, depending on the procedure, may take up to two weeks. You will experience some swelling, bruising, numbness, and minor discomfort. You will sleep with your head elevated 30-40 degrees. Pain medication and cold compresses can help minimize any pain, and you will be able to return to work and your normal activities within a week. Sutures will be removed after 5 days. The lips recover quickly due to the high levels of blood vessels in the area. Just rest, and let the area recover, and soon, you will be able to show off your new look – no injections required!
