A smooth, unlined brow sends a signal of youth and vitality. Over time, as the skin and tissue age, your eyebrows may begin to drift down and sag, creating a heavy, brooding appearance, with etched-in lines and creases. A brow lift solves these problems, creating a refreshed, younger-looking you.

What is a Brow Lift?

A brow lift is a cosmetic surgery procedure that addresses these changes by raising the soft tissue and skin of the forehead and brow, restoring a fresh appearance to the upper face. It can be performed endoscopically (with smaller incisions and faster recovery), or for more extreme cases of facial aging, with traditional techniques.

Endoscopic brow lift

Three or four small incisions are placed in the scalp, within the hairline, and an endoscope inserted (a thin tube with a small camera and light). The inner structure of the brow is revealed on a video monitor. Your surgeon will then insert small surgical instruments through other incisions to tighten the underlying structure of the brow, lifting it back to a more youthful position. The sagging tissue is lifted vertically and secured. The incisions are closed, and the area bandaged.

Non-surgical brow lift

If you desire the effects of a brow lift without undergoing surgery, BOTOX® injections may be an option for you. These results are temporary, lasting up to six months in some cases, and will require regular injections to maintain your desired look. BOTOX injections work by relaxing the muscles between the brows, smoothing the skin and allowing the forehead muscles to elevate the brows and open the eyes.

Classic brow lift (coronal brow lift)

A classic or coronal brow lift involves placing an incision within the hairline, from ear to ear. For cases of extreme facial sagging, and a very heavy brow, this technique may be appropriate.

The skin is lifted, and the muscle structure accessed, with excess skin and tissue removed, and the underlying muscles lifted. Although very effective, this procedure is less common because of the extensive incision. However, when done by an experienced and well-trained plastic surgeon, this incision is barely detectable and offers incredible brow lift results. This procedure is ideal for women with very high foreheads, as the brow can be lifted without altering the height of the hairline.

What does a brow lift treat?

A brow lift (or forehead lift) may be the appropriate surgery if you suffer from any of the following aesthetic problems

  • Heavy, overhanging brow
  • Eyebrows have drifted lower over time, causing “hooded” eyes
  • Deeply etched-in wrinkles and creases have developed on the forehead
  • Deep furrows have developed between your eyes
  • Excess skin and tissue have drooped down, affecting upper eyelids
  • Others ask you if you are tired, upset, or angry, even when you are feeling well

Candidates for a brow lift

The ideal brow is different for men and women—women tend to have more lifted brow arches, while men’s brows are typically flatter. The ideal brow for a woman starts above the eye and aligns with the outside of the nose. The brow arches delicately upward, with the highest point of the arch aligning with the outside corner of the eye, and then tapering off. The starting and ending positions of the brows should be at the same horizontal level. Men or women can be candidates for a brow lift when the forehead skin and tissue have become lax, deeply creased, or the brow appears heavy. All candidates should be in good general health and be a non-smoker.

What is the recovery after a brow lift?

The recovery from a brow lift is not difficult to experience. You may feel a tight sensation, and experience swelling and bruising. You will have prescription pain medication to keep you comfortable for the first few days of healing. Sleep on your back, with your head elevated for four weeks and avoid bending over, lifting, or any vigorous physical motions. Your incisions will heal within ten days to two weeks, with sutures or clips removed at about the seven-day mark. Your forehead may remain bandaged for about one week, and your brow will feel tight. You may be bruised on your upper lids or nose. The brow “settles” into position as the weeks pass.

How is a brow lift performed?

Most often, the endoscopic technique is employed. An outpatient procedure, a brow lift is typically performed with the patient under intravenous sedation with local anesthesia. Small incisions are placed within the hairline. The endoscope is inserted into one incision, with the tiny light and camera transmitting real-time images to a video monitor. With small surgical instruments inserted through the other incisions, the brow is repositioned, and the incisions then closed.

  • Anesthetic: Intravenous sedation with local anesthesia.
  • Incisions: Within the hairline, hidden once healed.

FAQ

At what age should I get a brow lift?

There is no specific age for a brow lift, but the procedure is generally performed on people who are 40 years old and up.

Will an endoscopic brow lift work for me?

Only an in-person consultation will reveal what is best in your case, but generally, most patients are candidates for this technique.

Will I have visible scars?

No, any scars will be hidden and not visible to others.

How long do brow lift results last?

A surgical brow lift typically delivers long-lasting results, with most patients enjoying their refreshed appearance for ten years or more. Although the procedure does not stop the natural aging process, it significantly sets back the visible signs of forehead aging.

Should I choose a brow lift or BOTOX for my forehead concerns?

The right choice depends on the type and severity of your concerns. BOTOX is excellent for softening dynamic wrinkles and producing a subtle, temporary brow lift, while a surgical brow lift addresses heavy, descended brows and deeply etched static lines that injectables cannot fully correct.

Should I get a brow lift or eyelid surgery?

Many patients believe they need eyelid surgery when their true concern is a heavy, descended brow creating the appearance of hooded eyes. A brow lift addresses sagging in the forehead and brow, while eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) addresses excess skin or fat directly on the upper or lower lids. In some cases, both procedures are performed together for a more complete refresh of the upper face.
