Dr. Rousso – Blog The Benefits of Facial Contouring The older we become, the more it shows in our facial
Full and luscious lips are a statement of youth and beauty. Unfortunately, not every person is born with full lips, and even naturally large lips can begin to thin with age. While some patients may desire a fuller pout, others would prefer to improve the area around the lips. Lip augmentation can be done to enhance the size and shape of the lips. Dr. Rousso offers several treatment options to address your concerns and provide the results you desire.
What Are the Benefits of Lip Augmentation?
Ideal candidates for lip augmentation should be in good health, non-smokers, and have realistic expectations. This treatment can dramatically enhance your lips and provide you with the following benefits:
- Fuller, more attractive lips
- Reduction in the appearance of fine lines
- Rejuvenation of the face
- Natural-looking results
- Can boost your self-confidence
What Are My Lip Augmentation Options?
Lip Lift Technique
A lip lift is done by removing a strip of skin just above the vermillion border to lift the entire lip. Another lip lift technique we perform is the bullhorn upper lip lift, which involves removing a strip of skin from just underneath the nose. This results in a lift to the central portion of the lip.
For patients who desire lip implants, we offer SurgiSil™ implants. The implants are inserted through a small incision made in the corner of the mouth and sliding the implant into the upper and lower lip. This procedure can be performed under local or sedation anesthesia. Implants come in multiple sizes to accommodate patients’ desires.
SMAS Lip Augmentation
Superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS) lip augmentation is a surgical procedure that is performed in conjunction with facelift surgery. Typically, a portion of the SMAS (which is excess soft tissue under the skin removed during a facelift) can be used to plump the lips. The thin strip of tissue is placed in the upper and lower lip and repositioned. This technique uses the patient’s own tissue and results are permanent.
Patients who desire a non-surgical approach for their lip augmentation have the choice of using fillers like Restylane® or JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA® XC. These fillers can be injected in the upper and lower lip to increase their size and shape. Fillers are non-surgical and require little to no downtime.
How Long Is the Recovery Period?
Lip augmentation, whether it is performed using implants or fillers, is an outpatient procedure that requires minimal downtime. If you choose lip implants or a lift technique, you will experience bruising, swelling, and discomfort for a few days. Pain medication and cold compresses can help minimize any pain, and you will be able to return to work and your normal activities within a few days.
What Results Can I Expect?
You should notice an immediate difference in your lips following your treatment, whether your procedure was surgical or non-surgical. Lip augmentation can provide you with long-lasting or permanent results, depending on the technique used.
